Meta evaluation of adoption of clinical recommendations for health care providers

Clinical guidelines for health care practitioners are being developed at an increasing rate these days. However, this does not necessarily imply that these guidelines are followed. The goal of this meta-review is twofold: first, to obtain a better knowledge of which elements influence guidelines implementation, and second, to provide insight into the "state-of-the-art" in this field of research. Our criteria for inclusion were met by 12 systematic reviews. There were no previous systematic meta-reviews that fulfilled all of our inclusion criteria. Only "small" or "minimum" problems were found in two of the twelve inspections, according to the criteria.
