A minimal invasive diagnostic method which involves the placement of a sterile saline in the sub segment of the lung and retrieved for analysis is called Bronchoalveolar lavage. The procedure is carried out by the introduction of a bronchoscope into the lungs. This procedure was invented by American doctors Reynolds and Newball in 1974 and was first utilized in India in 1994. It is predominantly used as a diagnostic technique of the lower respiratory tract pathology and in some case has therapeutic use. The conclusive diagnosis of tuberculosis, fungal infections and malignancies is possible by this procedure. This procedure is relatively very safe with least discomfort for the patient.
