Emergency Nursing

Emergency care is a specialty in which nurse care is the first point of contact for patients in the emergency or critical phase of their illness or injury. Emergency nurses have demonstrated a wealth of competence across a variety of knowledge and skills that they learn through ongoing professional development. This is mirrored in their positions and duties in Emergency Departments (ED) where they frequently have to work individually or in close collaboration with other health professionals within the ED team in order to make diagnosis or take immediate decisions. As a result, the nurse must be trained in timely, precise physical examination, early detection of life-threatening illness or injury, the use of specialized monitoring and treatment equipment and, in some situations, order diagnostic tests under the "advance care instructions" or "standing orders" provided by the hospital's emergency medical personnel.
