Environmental contamination plays an important role in the transmission of several pathogens that cause health-related infections. This article is the first of a three-part series that discusses cleaning and disinfection in healthcare settings. This illustrates the environmental decontamination process, which includes cleaning and disinfection and focuses on the role of the nurse in ensuring the environment is safe for patients. Decontamination is the process of removing or neutralizing harmful substances from humans, equipment, and the environment. This process is important to reduce further exposure and spread of contaminants to other areas / individuals. Environmental decontamination can be achieved through: Cleaning and Disinfection. Environmental contamination plays an important role in the transmission of several pathogens that cause health-related infections. The key stages of the decontamination process are: pre-sterilization cleaning. disinfection. inspection.
Environmental surfaces must be cleaned regularly, for example every day, and decontaminated immediately when it looks dirty. The general rule of environmental cleaning is to start cleaning at the highest point and work in the lowest direction; and from the outside. Environmental surface target disinfection is an established component of infection control activities to prevent the spread of nosocomial (multi-resistant) pathogens, but is less important than proper hand hygiene
