Nanotechnology In Cancer

Nanoscale devices are 100 to 10 000 times smaller than human cells. They are similar in size to large biological molecules like enzymes and receptors ("biomolecules"). Nanotechnology can rapidly and sensitively detect cancer-related molecules, allowing scientists to detect molecular changes even when they occur only in a small percentage of cells. Nanotechnology also has the potential to generate completely new therapeutic agents which are highly effective. Ultimately, the use of nanoscale cancer materials is unique in its ability to be readily functional and easily tuned; its ability to deliver and/or act as a therapeutic, diagnostic, or both; and its ability to accumulate passively at the tumor site, to be actively targeted at cancer cells, and to be delivered across traditional biological barriers in the body, such as dense stromal tissue or the blood brain barrier which regulates transportation of biomolecules from and to central nervous system. Nanotechnology also plays a major role in diagnosing cancer in humans.
