This remains unclear what precisely causes pancreatic cancer. Diabetes, chronic pancreatitis and stomach ulcer are risk factors. This is asymptomatic in early stage. Popular later-stage signs include weight loss and stomach pain. Treatment includes surgical procedures and other therapies.
The pancreas sits deep in the belly, below the uterus and before the spine. It has 2 main functions, producing digestive juices to digest and absorb food for the small intestine, and producing hormones such as insulin to help cells absorb nutrients and regulate blood glucose levels. Pancreatic cancer occurs when cells in the pancreas develop abnormal DNA mutations which cause them to grow and divide out of control, forming a tumor. The tumor also extends to certain organs including the heart, abdominal wall, lymph nodes, kidneys, or bones. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of death from cancer in the US.Conditions that raise the likelihood of pancreatic cancer include smoking, recurrent pancreatitis, hypertension, long-standing diabetes, a recent pancreatic cancer family background and diets rich in red and refined meats. Research into ways of preventing pancreatic cancer is ongoing. People with any of these risk factors , especially a family history of pancreatic cancer, should consider engaging in research studies or high-risk screening programs, and should focus on lifestyle habits such as not smoking and staying active.
