Sesquiterpenes are a terpenes class consisting of three isoprene groups, which sometimes have the molecular formula C15H24. Sesquiterpenes may be acyclic like monoterpenes or have many different combinations of rings in it.
Sesquiterpenes, like so many other classes of terpenes and other natural products, have attracted considerable attention due to the functions they play in biological processes and their utility for human uses. Nonetheless, one of the characteristics that helps to differentiate sesquiterpenes from many of the other natural product groups is the thousands of known sesquiterpene compounds.
