Abstract :

Regardless of HIV status, persons have the right to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services. With the current advances in HAART persons with HIV, most of whom are of reproductive age, are living longer, healthier lives and express the desire to have biological children. Of note, there is a growing trend of HIV infected persons in serodiscordant relationships, where only one partner is HIV infected. Despite the small population size, the Caribbean region is known to have the second highest prevalence of HIV globally. In Jamaica, the number of HIV infections continues to increase island-wide however, there are no documented studies exploring these HIV serodiscordant relationships in the region, even though such couples are considered high-risk for transmission. In this seminar, I will discuss findings gathered from a preliminary study exploring relationships between serostatus and disclosure from HIV serodiscordant couples attending a small center for HIV/AIDS research and educational services in Kingston, Jamaica.
