Placement and restoration of dental implants in the posterior maxilla presents with unique challenges for dentists who are placing and restoring dental implants in the area. A major part of this is the presence of the maxillary sinus which limits the amount of available bone. Pneumatization of the sinus even further limits available bone in the sinus and combined with having less dense bone in the posterior maxilla compared to other regions of the mouth results in implants that have less success rates. The type of bone in the posterior maxilla and procedures to address the limitations in the region have a direct impact on placement and restoration protocols in the area. The goal of this abstract is to review procedures that are required in the posterior maxilla to prepare sites for implant placement, indicated placement and restorative protocols recommended for the posterior maxilla, as well as a review of sinus augmentation protocols, use of short implants, and use of Zygomatic and Pterygoid implants, and their indications and contraindications for the posterior maxilla. Nkem Obiechina completed her training in Periodontics and Implant dentistry from Columbia University in 2001. She received her Doctorate of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1998. She is the recipient of the Melvin Morris Award for clinical excellence in Periodontics from Columbia University as well as the Northeast Regional Board Student Award for excellence in Periodontics. She has given multiple seminars for dentists on Periodontics and Implant dentistry and has completed publications including books on Dental Implant therapy for dentists and on Periodontics, as well as articles for multiple peer-reviewed journals. She remains involved in active private practice in the field of Periodontics and Dental implantology as well as a Dental Continuing Education provider.
