Perspectives to the effectiveness of psychobiotics on mental health and neurological conditions

Author(s): Manisha Mandal

Psychobiotics are such kinds of probiotics (beneficial bacteria), or the prebiotics (substrates enhancing the growth of probiotics) that establish balance between gut and brain through microbiota called ‘microbiota-gut-brain axis’ with the involvement of enteric nervous system and immune system. Due to the gut microbiota dysbiosis, there is an imbalance between the gut and brain leading to several neuropsychological conditions, including mental health problems and neurodegenerative (Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases) disorders. Psychobiotics are efficacious against such diseases. This communication, therefore, highlights the application of psychobiotics against mental health as well as neuro-disorders, based upon the scientific data published in literatures, explaining the possible mechanisms of psychobiotics action.
